VIDEO DESCRIPTION...
Setting up a new tank is fairly straightforward, but needs to be done correctly!
Preparing Ceramic Media is important and needs to be rinsed thoroughly to ensure that all dust traces are removed from the media before adding to the tank.
The rinsing method for new Ceramic Media, described in this video, aims to avoids exposing the media to tap water. Tap water contains chorine. This is extremely harmful to aquatic life. Research shows that water containing just 2 parts per million (ppm) of chlorine will take 4 to 5 days for the chlorine to evaporate from free standing water. Ceramic Media contains a large surface area, with crevices and pores. There is a risk with tap water that chlorine could become trapped within the media. This would slow the growth of bacteria on and within the media and delay the time expected to cycle an aquarium.
KEY THINGS TO NOTE WHEN PREPARING A NEW BIORB:
- The sachets provided with a new biOrb are not really of much use. Feel free to use them if you really want or simply discard them! Instead, you will need to get a good decholrinator (e.g Aquasafe) and a good bacterial product (e.g Aquavitro Seed).
- Rinse Ceramic Media in a bucket of water that has been treated with dechlorinator to avoid chlorine contamination. Repeat as necessary to ensure that the water used for rinsing is clear before adding the media to the tank.
- Ensure that you fit the biOrb (sponge) filter system cartridge firmly into the bubble tube before firmly fixing it within the aquarium. Add the complete unit to the tank and turn the bubble tube clockwise to lock (clockwise to lock, anti-clockwise to unlock).
- Fill the new aquarium with treated (dechlorinated) and warmed water.
- Add water that has been warmed (to say 25-28C).
- Avoid pouring aquarium water directly into the aquarium (from a height). Instead, add water gently or "break" the fall of the water using a colander. The best approach is to use an aquarium vacuum with a hose to provide a gentle flow of new water to the tank.
- Rinse and soak decorations and sculptures in a bucket of dechlorinated water for 30 mins before adding to the tank.
- A good time to add and arrange your biOrb plants and decorations is when the tank is about two thirds full of water.
- Once the tank is full of water, turn on the power to your lighting, air pump (and heater) and ensure items are running correctly.
- Leave the tank running (without fish) for at least three, or more, days. This is not "cycling", instead this time allows the tank to fully settle and ensures that the air and heating systems are running correctly. With a non-heated tank, this time also allows the tank's water temperature to stabilise to reflect room temperature.
- Before adding any fish please do ensure you fully understand the process of "cycling" an aquarium (various methods can be used).
Note: A brand new tank, when filled, may develop cloudy water. This reflects the new water having a lack of beneficial bacteria and is a scenario very typical of a brand new tank. It is easy to fix, but this colouration will go when you start to cycle the tank with bacteria and fish.
